| Intermediate League playoff outlook - season VIII (11.7.2005) |
IML after four of the five playoff rounds |
The contest only very few still care about..
What has happened so far: Intermediate League is finally closing in on the finals, almost a month after AML and Pro were both finished. The situation right now is one of the closest and most interesting ones in Online Asteroids league history, so it deserves a little outlook. Four of the five round robin rounds have now been played and Dissent has finished their matches with a 3-1 record. Trailing close behind are StarFire Elite (2-1) and Intrinsic (2-1). We even have to include the fourth ranked squad, Disavowed, which is currently 1-2. Things are really mixed up now and we could end up with three teams going 3-1, or maybe even three teams going 2-2 with Dissent being the only 3-1.
Next week: StarFire Elite (2-1) faces Nightwatch (0-3) and Intrinsic (2-1) goes up against Disavowed (1-2)
Current IML standings (change from Current to Playoffs in the dropdown menu)
Dissent: Dissent has a bye week. They're currently leading the pack with their 3-1 record and +11 differential. They did lose on the third week to Intrinsic 12-3 and that might just cost them.
StarFire Elite: StarFire Elite is now 2-1 after upsetting Intrinsic 12-3 on week four. The squad's differential is now +13 after the big win. They're facing Nightwatch (0-3 so far) and need to win to reach the finals. If they lose to Nightwatch, they're pretty much eliminated.
Intrinsic: After a loss to StarFire Elite, Intrinsic is now 2-1 with a +2 differential. If StarFire Elite beats Nightwatch, Intrinsic needs to beat Disavowed on week five to have a theoretical chance of making the final. I'll go through the possible scenarios after Disavowed.
Disavowed: 1-2 now, but they still hold a theoretical chance of reaching the finals with a big win over Intrinsic if StarFire Elite helps them out by losing big to Nightwatch.
Nightwatch: 0-3 and out of the playoff race, but can still drop StarFire Elite from the final with a win on week 5.
Pretty messed up. Let's go through the possible scenarios.
Scenario #1: StarFire Elite lose to Nightwatch by any score and Intrinsic beats Disavowed by any score.
Finals: Dissent (3-1) vs. Intrinsic (3-1). StarFire Elite (2-2) eliminated.
Scenario #2: StarFire Elite beats Nightwatch by any score and Intrinsic beats Disavowed by a differential greater than nine. In this case we'll have a three way tie with Dissent, StarFire Elite and Intrinsic at 3-1. Since Intrinsic beat Dissent, Dissent beat StarFire Elite and StarFire Elite beat Intrinsic, the head-to-head is moot and it all goes to differentials. Dissent is now +11, StarFire Elite +13 and Intrinsic +2. If Intrinsic can get their differential to +12 or more (a win by 9+ kills), they'll be in the finals against StarFire Elite (who have a differential ranging from +14 to +25 depending on the final score of the Nightwatch match)
Finals: StarFire Elite (3-1) vs. Intrinsic (3-1). Dissent (3-1) eliminated.
Scenario #3: StarFire Elite beats Nightwatch by any score and Intrinsic beats Disavowed by a differential lower than ten. StarFire Elite, of course, in the finals. Intrinsic is 3-1 and tied with Dissent, but Dissent has a better differential and goes to the finals.
Finals: StarFire Elite (3-1) vs. Dissent (3-1). Intrinsic (3-1) eliminated.
Scenario #4: StarFire Elite loses to Nightwatch and Intrinsic loses to Disavowed. In this case StarFire Elite, Intrinsic and Disavowed are all 2-2. Dissent goes to the finals with their 3-1. The three squads with 2-2 would be ranked by head-to-head. Since StarFire Elite has beaten both of the two squads, they'd be ranked #2 in the division. Disavowed would pass Intrinsic and get the final ranking of #3 for consolation purposes. The outcome would be basically the same even if StarFire Elite would've beat Nightwatch.
Finals: Dissent (3-1) vs. StarFire Elite (2-2). Disavowed (2-2) and Intrinsic (2-2) eliminated.
Scenario #5: Explained in #4.
Finals: Dissent (3-1) vs. StarFire Elite (3-1). Disavowed (2-2) and Intrinsic (2-2) eliminated.
In conclusion: So after a long IML season, the final pairing is still very much unknown and next week's matches will be very important. Try to forget the "this system sucks" -attitude and come see how the last matches of the Premier season are played. IML, despite being rather thin on squads this season, is still on a relatively high gameplay level.
